Who would win in a battle

Gray Wolf vs Spotted Hyena

Hey guys this battle was one in which I think a serious upset took place but that is only my opinion, the battle of Gray wolf and Spotted hyena.  Like last time there is quite a bit of data I collected so I will only share a few things.

Gray Wolf:

  • Slender/Powerful Build
  • Runs 34-38 mph
  • 42 26 mm teeth
  • 1500 lb/in^2 bite force
  • 41-63 inches long
  • 32-34 inch shoulder height
  • 11-20 inch tail
  • 29-85 pounds, can get over 100 lbs from time to time (depending on the are it's in)
  • Dense/Fluffy fur with short under fur and long coarse guard hairs
  • Sharp hearing, an hear up to a frequency of 26 kHz
  • Highly territorial
  • 1 inch canines
  • Aggressive
  • Always looking for a fight and will not back out of one
  • Silent/Stealthy hunters
  • Have been known to attack animals up to 3 times their own size
  • Inaccurate Strikers
  • Keen night vision
  • Follows tracks
- Much quicker then the Hyena, more determined to win a fight
I have not nearly as much on the Spotted Hyena but I did get enough to make a realistic match

Spotted Hyena:

  • Powerful neck
  • 37-65.3 inches long
  • 9.8-14 inch long tails
  • 28-36 inch shoulder height
  • 89-225 lbs
  • loud laughter
  • 6443 lb/in^2 bite force (stronger than that of a grizzly bear)
  • Can kill black rhinos
  • Prefers to attack animas from 123.5 lbs to 401.25 lbs
  • Good night vision
  • Aggressive
  • Scavengers
  • Short Hair
-Size and Strength advantage over the wolf, however due to the laughter gives the wolf a good advantage for a sneak attack

Here is how the battle happened...

The scenario started with the hyena feeding off a kill it stole from a lioness, the wolf smells meat and silently investigates, it traces the tracks of the hyena and hears the laughter, it takes it's shot for a sneak attack from behind... it jumps on the hyena and sinks its jaws into the neck of the hyena and the hyena jerks him off, the hyena then takes his chance at the wolf's neck with those powerful jaws and bites into the chest of the wolf, and does not let go, after it knows the wolf is to weak it bites into the neck of the wolf until it's dead.

I ran the simulation numerous times and the only way the wolf would win is if he were to grab and somehow break the hyena's leg, then grab his snout to break it and chew into the neck of the hyena and rip through it.

All in all though the hyena is totally dominant over the wolf winning 89 times out of 100.

I was totally surprised to see this outcome I didn't expect the hyena to win especially with these numbers but a win is a win and thus another matchup settled, so until next time this is Tyler signing off with this message, please read this and tell your friends about this site because I put a lot of effort and time into this thanks.

  1. Just for the record when a spotted hyena laughs its actually a submissive gesture made by males to females and is only really heard during interclan fights and at kill sights. The most accurate results would be one large male wolf agains a female spotty. But this is a great page, well done. (Though pointless as hopefully this battle will never happen)

  3. Watch a video of lion vs hyena to get the idea of just how hard it is to kill a spotted hyena. Male lions just know how to fight very well as it's their way of life than any cat family. Yet, they commit such great effort to deal with spotted hyenas- I don't think any individual member of a dog family could be a problem for a full grown male lion. I mean, well, a wolf perhaps can't stand a chance against a lion. An animal that takes on a lion and survives must be a force to reckon with. I know of a guy near home who was attacked by a spotted hyena in the bush. He hit it on the head several times with a hatchet and still it couldn't back off. He finally managed to climb in a tree but without 2 of his right fingers. Hyenas simply don't back off easily. My vote would go to a spotted hyena.

  7. Female Spotted Hyena vs Male Grey Wolf. The spotted hyena shall win one on one. Gray Wolves are pack hunters who are determined to fight as well as Spotted Hyenas, but Hyenas, being larger with a more robust build, powerful jaws by science (as tested on National Geographic of a Young Juvenile having 603 psi), and 3 times the testosterone in the female giving her pure aggression. Wolves are smaller and are filled with aggression as well, but not as much aggression as the spotted hyena. Both are efficient hunters and hunt most of their meals, but as far as dominance-aggression and territorial fights, the Spotted Hyena has been known to rip off the limbs of their opponents. Wolf territorial fights will end up in injured wolves as well, but hyenas who lose battles often come up missing an ear, part of a nose or mouth, a leg, an eye, etc. Crocuta Crocuta (Spotted Hyena) will do more damage to an opponent than Canis Lupus (Gray Wolf).

    SPOTTED HYENA STATS

    Build: Sturdy

    Bite Force: 1100 psi

    Temperament: Very Aggressive

Hunting: Wears down prey; rips apart and devours

    Sociality: Clan/Pack

Offspring: Eyes Open; Fully Developed Teeth; Fights at Birth

    Size: 4 to 9.5 ft

    Weight: 88 to 190 lbs

    Dominant Sex: Female

How They Get Their Food: Mostly Hunts and Rarely Scavenges

Weapons: Powerful Jaws and Sharp Teeth

    Coat and Markings: Short; Spotted

Senses: Keen Vision, Smell, and Hearing

    Protection: Highly Territorial

    Parenting: Mother Only

Prey: Wildebeest, Hippos, Giraffes, Zebra, Antelope, Kudu, Buffalo, Reptiles, Birds, Fish, Elephants, Warthog, etc.

    Brains or Brawn?: Both

Attack Damage: Missing Pieces of Flesh; Shattered Bones; Bite Wounds; Missing Limbs (Legs, Ears, Noses, or Tails)

    Speed: 37 mph

Territory Marking: Pasting w/ Anal Scent Glands

    Hierarchy: Matriarchal

Ranks: Matriarch, Subordinate Females, Female Cubs, Male Cubs, Patriarch, Subordinate Males

    Habitat: African Savanna

Competition/Enemies: Lions (Panthera Leo), African Wild Dogs (Lycaon Pictus)

Clan Range: Splits into Small Groups

According to these stats, Crocuta Crocuta will have a higher chance of taking on Canis Lupus in a 1v1 fight where both carnivores are ready to fight. If the Spotted Hyena bites into the Gray Wolf’s neck, shakes him or her around, breaking bones and clamping the windpipe, the Wolf would die or be severely weakened as the Hyena devours the canid. They Hyena would have to use brains and stamina to catch the wolf after constantly fighting and tiring the canid out before using strength to devour.

    GRAY WOLF STATS

    Build: Slender

    Bite force: 400 psi

    Temperament: Aggressive

    Hunting: Devours and rips apart

    Sociality: Pack

    Offspring: Helpless; Eyes Closed;

    Size: 4 to 6.56 ft

    Weight: 40 to 175 lbs

Dominant Sex: Male and Female (Alpha Pair)

How They Get Their Food: Mostly Hunts

    Weapons: Sharp Teeth

    Coat and Markings: Long; None

Senses: Keen Vision, Smell, and Hearing

    Protection: Territorial

    Parenting: The Whole Pack

Prey: Bison, Deer, Rabbits and Hares, Moose, Beaver, Caribou, Ox, Sheep, Goats, Elk, etc.

    Brains or Brawn?: Brains

Attack Damage: Missing Pieces of Flesh; Broken Bones; Bite Wounds

    Speed: 31 to 37 mph

    Territory Marking: Urinating

    Hierarchy: Alpha Pair

    Ranks: Alpha Pair, Betas, Omegas

    Habitat: North American Forest

    Competition/Enemies: Coyotes, Bears, Foxes, Cougars

    Pack Range: Always Stays Together

According to these stats, Canis Lupus may have a chance of killing Crocuta Crocuta if only the Wolf is ready to fight while the Hyena backs down or avoids. To avoid those powerful jaws, the Wolf would act as the smaller African Cousin by quickly biting at the Hyena’s hind quarters and ripping pieces of flesh off as the Hyena swings around trying to get the Wolf to leave him or her alone. The wolf would have speed and agility to avoid getting deeply wounded or killed.

In This Case, The Spotted Hyena Would Win This Fight If Both Carnivores: The Female Spotted Hyena and Male Gray Wolf Were to Directly Attack Each Other.
